Claude for Startups, Anthropic's startup program, gives approved founders $1,000 in Claude API credits, a free year of Claude Team for up to five Premium seats (if you are new to Team), and up to $45K in partner offers, as of October 2026. It is open to startups "founded in the last 5 years or funded in the last 2," including bootstrapped and pre-seed companies, and you apply directly in the Claude Console.

This guide covers:

  • What the program gives and what each benefit is worth
  • Who is eligible, and who Anthropic's terms exclude
  • How to apply, step by step, and whether you need a VC
  • Which terms matter before you accept
  • How the credits compare with Google's startup credits, and what to plan for when they expire

Takeaways:

  • The fixed credit is $1,000 in API credits, which expire six months after they are granted. The bigger numbers are conditional: up to $100K more through a VC in Anthropic's partner network, and up to $45K in third-party offers.
  • You do not need venture funding or a VC referral to apply.
  • Credits work on the first-party Claude API through Claude Console only, not on AWS Bedrock or Google Cloud Vertex AI.
  • Anthropic decides eligibility in its sole discretion and can change or end the program.

What Is Claude for Startups?

The program page is headed "Claude Startups," and its page title reads "Claude for Startups program." Its legal terms, last updated May 22, 2025, still call it the "Anthropic Startup Program," so you will see both names.

It is a benefits program: credits, a Team plan, partner offers, office hours and events. The Anthropic program pages we reviewed mention no equity stake and no fee.

The Claude Startup Stack

The Stack lists discounts and credits from independent companies. Examples listed on the program page on October 7, 2026 include $5K in ClickHouse Cloud credits, 12 months free plus 33M characters from ElevenLabs, 25% off the first year of Gamma Pro annual, and 3 months of Granola Business free for up to 10 seats.

Anthropic is explicit that "Claude Startup Stack benefits are offered by independent third-party companies, not by Anthropic." The addendum adds that offers are at each provider's discretion and may change, can be redeemed once per member, are non-transferable, have no cash value, and "may not be sold, resold, auctioned, bartered or combined with other offers." Read the provider's own terms before you redeem.

Office hours and events

Applied AI office hours are "45-minute live sessions for members, held every other week." The addendum notes that Anthropic "does not commit to any particular amount of support" and may change or discontinue the service. The page also lists in-person events such as Claude Founder House.

Claude for Startups Eligibility

Anthropic's FAQ answers "Who can apply?" this way: "Startups founded in the last 5 years or funded in the last 2. You'll need a Claude Console account, a company email that matches your website's domain, and a short description of what you're building. We review every application." The FAQ adds that applicants must comply with Anthropic's policies on which applicants it can support.

On funding, the FAQ is direct: "The program is open to bootstrapped, pre-seed, and venture-backed startups." That makes the entry bar lower than programs that require a recent equity round.

The Team offer has its own limit: "Only orgs that are new to Teams qualify for this offer."

Who the terms exclude

The Anthropic Startup Program Official Terms say you are not eligible if you are "established or operating in, or plan to make Anthropic's services available to persons located in, Belarus, China, Cuba, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, Sudan, Syria, Crimea, or the so-called Donetsk People's Republic or Luhansk People's Republic." You are also ineligible if you are prohibited from receiving funds or services under U.S. or other applicable laws or export controls, and Anthropic employees and their immediate families cannot apply.

How to Apply to Claude for Startups

  1. Create a Claude Console account. The application lives in the Console, and the FAQ says to "sign in to the Claude Console and fill out the application."
  2. Use a company email. It must match your website's domain.
  3. Write a short description of what you are building. Anthropic's terms say it weighs "business traction, investment, and funding, as well as Claude integration and usage," so be concrete about how you use Claude.
  4. Submit the application. Anthropic says most applications are decided within minutes, and the rest go to a manual review that usually takes 2 to 3 business days. You get an email as soon as there is a decision.
  5. Claim your benefits. After acceptance you get an email with a link to the Claude Startups page in Claude Console. Claim the Team offer and API credits there.
  6. Book office hours. Accepted members get a registration link by email and in the Claude Startups portal.

Existing members do not need to reapply to redeem Stack offers: "As a member of our Claude for Startups program you are now eligible to redeem the offers in the console."

Do you need a partner VC or accelerator?

No. The application is direct, and the FAQ says you do not need VC funding. The VC route is an add-on: "Founders backed by a VC in our partner network can get up to $100K in additional API credits through their VC." The program page does not name the partner VCs and does not mention accelerators, so ask your investor whether they are in the network and how they claim the credits.

What the Credits Can and Cannot Be Spent On

Anthropic's FAQ says: "Claude Startups credits apply to the first-party Claude API through Claude Console. They can't be used on AWS Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, or other third-party platforms." If your stack calls Claude through a cloud provider, those credits will not cover it.

The official terms do not state a credit amount, an expiry or a spending restriction, which is why the program page is the source for those. The page puts expiry plainly: "Credits expire six months after they're granted." Anthropic does not say whether the six months start at acceptance or at claim, so claim them when you are ready to build. The credits are for the Claude API, so GPU instances are not part of the program.

Terms That Matter

These are the clauses worth knowing before you accept:

  • Sole discretion. "Program eligibility is determined in Anthropic's sole discretion," and decisions are "final and binding."
  • Verification. A selected company may be asked to sign an affidavit and a publicity and liability release, returned within 14 calendar days "or the Program Benefits may be forfeited."
  • Publicity. You grant Anthropic permission "to use your name and logo to publicly identify you as a Selected Awardee and Anthropic customer," and agree to consider in good faith a request for an executive quote or co-marketing.
  • Taxes. Selected Awardees are "solely responsible for determining whether receipt of API credits creates any tax obligations," and Anthropic will not issue tax forms unless the law requires it.
  • Changes. Anthropic "reserves the right in its sole discretion to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the Program."
  • Good standing. Additional Benefits are available "only while Members remain in good standing with Anthropic."

How Claude for Startups Compares With Google's Startup Credits

Google runs the closest equivalent, the Google for Startups Cloud Program, and its official pages let us compare the two directly (figures as of October 2026).

Claude for StartupsGoogle for Startups Cloud Program
Fixed credit$1,000 in Claude API credits$2,000 (Start tier) or up to $200,000 (Scale tier), up to $350,000 for AI-first Scale startups
ExpirySix months after grantedStart: valid for 12 months. Scale: over 2 years
Funding ruleFounded in the last 5 years or funded in the last 2, bootstrapped companies can applyStart needs no round. Scale needs recent equity funding, pre-seed to Series A
Credits apply toFirst-party Claude API through Claude ConsoleGoogle Cloud services, including Google's Gemini and Gemma models. Third-party models are billed directly

Claude's fixed credit is $1,000 and applies to one API, while Google's larger amounts depend on funding stage and apply to Google Cloud. Neither program's pages say how they interact with the other, so apply to each on its own terms. Our Google for Startups guide covers the tiers in full.

What to Plan For When Credits Run Out

Your $1,000 expires six months after it is granted, and the free Team year ends after one year. Track your monthly Claude API spend during the credit period so the first full-price invoice is not a surprise, and ask whether a partner VC can unlock the larger $100K pool.

Claude credits cover the Claude API only. If your product also runs open-weight models, fine-tuning or embeddings on your own GPUs, Aquanode rents GPUs by the hour (see pricing), has per-GPU pages such as H100, and offers a GPU recommender to size a job before you rent anything. FAQ

Who is eligible for Claude for Startups?

Startups "founded in the last 5 years or funded in the last 2," with a Claude Console account, a company email matching the website domain and a short description of the product. Bootstrapped, pre-seed and venture-backed companies can all apply, subject to the country and legal exclusions in the terms.

How much does Claude for Startups give?

Every approved company gets $1,000 in Claude API credits. New-to-Team orgs also get one year of Claude Team free for up to five Premium seats, and members can redeem up to $45K in third-party offers. VC-backed founders in the partner network can get up to $100K more through their VC.

Do I need a VC to apply?

No. The VC credit is optional and claimed through your investor.

Do the credits expire?

Yes. "Credits expire six months after they're granted." Anthropic's pages do not state an expiry for the free Team year beyond calling it "one year."

Can I combine it with other startup programs?

Anthropic's pages do not address other startup programs. The limits they do state are that the Team offer is only for orgs new to Teams and that Stack benefits cannot be combined with other offers. Check each program's own rules before assuming credits combine.
